Tottenham leave Mathys Tel out of Champions League squad

Mathys Tel who joined Spurs on a permanent basis this summer has had to be trimmed to comply with Uefa rules.

The £35 million signing for Tottenham has been omitted from Thomas Frank’s Champions League squad despite joining on a permanent deal only this summer.

The 20-year-old Frenchman signed on loan from Bayern Munich in January amid an injury crisis for Ange Postecoglou with an obligation to buy for Spurs. Yet it seems clear that under Frank the winger is seen as surplus to requirements for now at least.

Champions League squads include 25 on the Uefa A-list of which at least eight must be homegrown under Uefa regulations. If there are not the full complement of eight then the squad size has to be reduced accordingly.

Frank has also omitted the long-term injured and unavailable including James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski. The midfielder Yves Bissouma who has been dropped by Frank for disciplinary reasons is also out. So too Romanian defender Radu Dragusin and Japan international Kota Takai.

It will be a major blow for Tel and also an embarrassment for Spurs, that their A-list only features 22 players. Four of the homegrown players have to have been developed at the club in question and Spurs have only one in that regard, reserve goalkeeper Brandon Austin.

Tel scored two in the Premier League and one in the FA Cup before the end of the season but has only made late substitute appearances under Frank this season.
