Slovakia Stuns Germany with 2-0 Victory in World Cup Qualifier

Slovakia delivered a shock 2-0 victory over Germany in their opening UEFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier match in Group A.
The Falcons, led by coach Francesco Calzona, outplayed the four-time world champions with a masterclass in defensive organization and clinical counter attacking, earning their first competitive win against Germany in the nation’s history.
Slovakia set the tone early, with their compact 4-5-1 formation frustrating Germany’s attempts to impose their usual dominance. The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute when David Strelec found Dávid Hancko with a precise pass, allowing the 27-year-old defender to slot the ball past Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann at the near post.
Ten minutes into the second half, Slovakia doubled their lead with a moment of brilliance. Strelec, the hero of the night, received the ball on a swift counter-attack, cut inside, and unleashed a stunning left-footed strike into the top left corner, leaving Baumann helpless. The 24-year-old Middlesbrough forward’s superb finish sealed the three points for the hosts.
Under the guidance of captain Milan Škriniar, Slovakia’s defense was impenetrable, neutralizing Germany’s star-studded attack.
Despite holding 70% possession, Germany struggled to create clear chances, with goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka making key saves to deny Maximilian Mittelstädt and Florian Wirtz. Young Feyenoord winger Leo Sauer tormented Germany’s backline, nearly scoring in the first half when his effort forced a fine save from Baumann.
Julian Nagelsmann’s setup looked disjointed, with their static positioning and lack of midfield control exposed by Slovakia’s disciplined approach. The visitors’ defense, featuring Antonio Rüdiger and Jonathan Tah, was caught out of position for both goals, while Joshua Kimmich struggled to assert his usual influence.
Nagelsmann, who had emphasized qualifying with “dominance” pre-match, was left frustrated as his side failed to register meaningful shots despite their possession.
“We had the ball but no menace,” Nagelsmann admitted. “Slovakia deserved the win, they were sharper and more decisive.”
This is the second time Germany have lost a World Cup qualifier by more than one goal.
Germany, who are favorites to top Group A but now face pressure to respond against Northern Ireland after this setback defeat.
Julian Nagelsmann’s led Germany have now lost their last 3 matches.
For Slovakia, the victory is a dream start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.
“This is a massive result for us,” Calzona said. “We played with heart and executed our plan perfectly.”
For now, the Falcons celebrate a night that will be remembered as one of the greatest in their footballing history.
