Douglas Luiz joins Nottingham Forest on loan from Juventus

Published on August 20, 2025 by master

Nottingham Forest have agreed a deal to sign Douglas Luiz from Juventus. The move will see the 27-year-old Brazil international move on loan with an obligation to buy based on the number of games he plays for the Premier League club. Forest also hold the option to make the transfer permanent for a fee in the region of €30million in case he doesn’t appear in the required amount of matches. The East Midlands club have been extremely active in the market over recent days with deals secured for Omari Hutchinson, James McAtee and Arnaud Kalimuendo. That business followed the club-record move for Dan Ndoye from Bologna earlier in the window while the pursuit of Rico Lewis from Manchester City is continuing. Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus have also arrived from Botafogo, while goalkeeper Angus Gunn was signed on a free transfer. Luiz joined Juventus last summer from Aston Villa on a five-year deal worth €50million as Villa sought to avoid breaching Premier League profitability and sustainability rules (PSR). The Brazil international has made 27 appearances since of which just six were starts, and only three in the league. Source: nytimes

Kai Havertz Out with Knee Injury for Arsenal

Published on August 20, 2025 by master

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz is set for a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury. The 26-year-old Germany international was not part of an open training session at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday morning. Assessments are at an early stage so the prognosis and duration of any lay-off is unclear. Arsenal are, however, actively exploring the transfer market to potentially reinforce their attack and cover the absence of Havertz. New signing Viktor Gyokeres is now the only recognised striker fit and available in Mikel Arteta’s squad. Leandro Trossard, who has recently agreed to a new contract with the club, has also featured there previously. Gabriel Jesus, a more tried and tested option, is still recovering from the anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in January and is not expected back for some time. This is the second injury Havertz has sustained in 2025 after he suffered a hamstring tear at a training camp in Dubai in February. That ruled him out of 18 matches across the Premier League and Champions League, before he returned for two substitute appearances in Arsenal’s final two league games. During that absence, midfielder Mikel Merino also operated as a No 9. Havertz replaced Gyokeres after an hour during Arsenal’s opening Premier League game on Sunday, a 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The German has played 88 times for Arsenal since joining from Chelsea in the summer of 2023, scoring 29 goals. Arsenal return to action on Saturday when they host Leeds United. Source: NYTIMES

Barnsley: Nwakali to Leave Oakwell in 2025

Published on August 20, 2025 by master

Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane has confirmed that Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali is no longer part of his plans and will be moved on before the close of the summer transfer window. The 26-year-old, who joined the Reds in August 2024 on a three-year deal, has been absent from Hourihane’s squad throughout pre-season and the opening games of the new campaign. While his initial absence was attributed to family matters in Nigeria, the manager has now made his stance clear. Speaking at a press conference ahead of Tuesday’s League One clash with Peterborough United, Hourihane said bluntly:“Yeah, that’ll be the plan. We are looking to move him on.” The Irishman’s response leaves little doubt over Nwakali’s future at Oakwell, with the club weighing up whether his departure will be on loan or a permanent exit. Nwakali made 26 appearances for Barnsley last season but faded from the squad towards the closing weeks of the campaign. Last month, Hourihane had already hinted at a decision, telling the Barnsley Chronicle that the midfielder “hasn’t been involved in the squad over the course of pre-season.” A product of the Arsenal academy, Nwakali joined the Gunners in 2016 but never made a senior appearance, instead embarking on loan spells at MVV Maastricht, VVV-Venlo, and Porto. He later signed for Spanish club Huesca in 2019 but departed in 2022 under controversial circumstances after claiming the club pressured him not to attend the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria. Since then, his career has taken him to Ponferradina in Spain’s Segunda División and Portuguese outfit Chaves before his move to Barnsley. Hourihane stressed that the Reds’ strong start to the season had not altered the club’s transfer stance:“It’s still the same scenario and thought process. We’re still pinpointing areas we need to improve. Hopefully, if we can get that done between now and the end of the window we’ll be in a decent place.” Nwakali’s next move is yet to be determined, but with his time at Oakwell drawing to a close, he faces another crossroads in a career marked by frequent transfers and unfulfilled potential. Newcastle hit back at Isak’s exit plea in statement

Published on August 20, 2025 by master

Newcastle have hit back at Alexander Isak in response to the player’s stunning statement on his Newcastle future. Isak addressed the long-running saga which has seen him get heavily linked with a move away for the first time in a bombshell post on Instagram on Tuesday night. In the statement, Isak cited ‘broken promises’ by the club as the reason he cannot remain at St James’ Park. The Sweden striker is understood to be keen on a move to Liverpool, who submitted a £110million bid to Newcastle for him, an offer that was swiftly rejected. Isak didn’t take part in Newcastle’s pre-season tour earlier this summer and played no part in their opening Premier League match at Aston Villa last weekend having earlier refused to play for the club again in a shocking ultimatum. Addressing his no-show at the PFA Awards in London, Isak said: “I’m proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25.“First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way. “I’m not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn’t feel right to be there. “I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. “The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. “When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”Newcastle responded with a statement of their own later on Tuesday. It read: “We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening. “We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer. “We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. “As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. “We do not foresee those conditions being met. “This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.” The Magpies have maintained throughout the summer that the 25-year-old is not for sale, especially now as they are not engaged in any active talks with a player who’s deemed a suitable replacement. After rejecting the £110m bid from Liverpool, Newcastle appeared to soften their stance as they looked to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. However, Sesko’s decision to join Manchester United instead means Newcastle were back to square one and are now determined to keep hold of their player. Meanwhile, they’re also scrambling to sign Brentford forward Yoane Wissa. As for Liverpool, they’re ready to make an improved £120m bid for the player, which would be a British transfer record. But this is some way short of Newcastle’s £150m valuation of the player. Whatever happens over the next few days, it makes the clash between Newcastle and Liverpool next Monday night all the more mouth-watering.a

Real Madrid secure win via Mbappé contoversial penalty

Published on August 19, 2025 by master

The Santiago Bernabéu erupted as Kylian Mbappé opened his scoring account for the 2025/26 season. The French star converted from the penalty spot to make it 1-0 against Osasuna, in a match marked by controversy over the decision. Beyond the debate, the goal carried symbolic weight: it was his first of the campaign wearing Real Madrid’s iconic No. 10 shirt. Xabi Alonso’s side dominated possession in the opening 45 minutes but struggled to turn control into clear chances. Only a long-range strike from Dean Huijsen and a wayward attempt from Mbappé threatened Sergio Herrera, who looked solid between the posts. Meanwhile, Osasuna, led by Alessio Lisci, sat deep in a compact block, closing down spaces and holding firm to take the 0-0 into halftime. The decisive moment came in the 51st minute. Mbappé drove down the right and, after a sharp feint, was brought down inside the box by Juan Cruz. Referee Adrián Cordero immediately pointed to the spot, and despite heated protests from the visitors, VAR upheld the decision.Mbappé stepped up himself and made no mistake. He sent Sergio Herrera—a keeper who had previously denied Madrid from the spot— the wrong way, celebrating with passion as he scored his first goal of the season. Beyond the scoreboard, the strike had special meaning: it was Mbappé’s first goal wearing Real Madrid’s legendary No. 10, a number steeped in history at the club. After a quiet first half, the Frenchman delivered in the decisive moment, opening his tally for the campaign and reaffirming his role as leader of Xabi Alonso’s new project. Source: BEINSports

Morgan Rogers wins 2025 PFA Young Player Award

Published on August 19, 2025 by master

Rogers is the fifth Aston Villa representative to be named young player of the season, following in the footsteps of Andy Gray, Gary Shaw, Ashley Young and James Milner. Rogers said he wants to be one of the “incredible players people speak about”. “Later down the line, I want to be one of those incredible players people speak about, so to do that I have to do what they did and what they followed after,” he told BBC Sport. “It’s a nice recognition but there’s more to win and I can’t wait.” It is the seventh successive year that an English player has won the award. Villa signed Rogers from Middlesbrough for a fee in the region of £15m in February 2024 and he became a regular under Unai Emery last season. The 23-year-old featured 54 times across all competitions, scoring 14 times, as Villa finished sixth in the Premier League, reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the semi-finals of the FA Cup. He was also rewarded with a first senior England call up in November, making his debut against Greece, and has gone on to earn six caps. Arsenal pair Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri; Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez, who have left Bournemouth for Real Madrid and Liverpool respectively; and Liam Delap, now at Chelsea after catching the eye at Ipswich, were also in contention for the award. Meanwhile, goalkeeper James Trafford, who joined Manchester City last month, has been named Championship player of the year after keeping 29 clean sheets to help Burnley finish second and secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.
